It's that time of the year again

It’s that time of the year again and if you happen to be stuck indoors because of the weather; we’re willing to bet you’re already scheming new projects or combinations for the New Year. 1. Well, I am in the process of geting all the parts together for my spring time build of a virgin 400 chevy that will go into my 82 Z-28 this year. I scored a low mileage block that I am only going to need the minimum of honing out the bores since they are still nearly perfect with some new bearings and rings along with ARP hardware throughout and Moroso oiling system to keep it oiled. The cam will be a Trick Flow retro hydraulic roller unit with .528/.539" lift with 1.5 rockers and .233/.234" @.050" duration and 110 LSA. I will use Comp Cams retro hydraulic roller lifters. For heads, well after your article on the Patriot heads, I am going with their Super Street 215 CNC 64cc heads using Comp Cams Beehive springs and hardware and talking with Gunner there, he will even take care of drilling the heads for the 400. On top will be an Edelbrock Air Gap RPM manifold with a 750 Holley carb. This will be tied to a built 700R4 with an Art Carr 3000 stall lockup converter. Can't wait for spring!!

2. My winter project is an ongoing project (aren't they all?) But I am in the process of building a 383 stroker going into an 87 extS10. I'm using Dart pro-1 230 platinum 64cc chamber, scat crank & rods, J&E flat-top pistons, comp cam, Isky lifters, super victor intake, Holley carb. Machinist claims this should be pushing 600hp, we'll see. Behind this is a muncie 4spd (for now), with a 9inch bringing up the rear. In the rear I'm using Calvert racing springs and cal-trac bars with rancho adj shocks. The truck is down to the frame being completely redone, wasn't suppose be this involved,but got carried away. I'm hoping the truck will be in the 10's maybe high 9's. I am having to take a break from the S10 to check a 70 camaro rs on the raod that we found while on vacation last August in Seattle. I had the RS shipped to Ohio, for future enjoyment. It has been sitting in a garage atleast since Feb '98. The goal is to get it on the road pretty much as is, since it is closer than the S10.

3. It's all about refining the existing package.
Currently the 350 in my 86 Camaro has SpeedPro flat tops, vortec heads, three angle valve job, bee hive springs, 1.6 ProMagnum rockers, 268H Comp flat tappet cam(4 degrees advanced),RPM Air Gap, 600 vac Holley, Mallory dist with 34 total advance and shorty headers. A built 700r4 with 2500 stall TCI convertor, 3.73 gears and 26" drag radials complete a 3600lb chassis.
13.4@102 with a 1.89 60' is the best I can do. I think it's all in the headers. A set of long tube (1 5/8) including properly sized collectors are what I hope will build some of the torque I know is available.
Ever notice how the engine builds in the car mags don't discuss the specs on the dyno headers in much detail? (look at those secondaries!)
And any 3rd gen owner will tell that true duals with properly spec'd headers is a pain to build.
A good cold air induction system is in the works too.
If any body needs me I'll be in the garage.

4. No updates going on this winter for me. My car is in California and I'm in Idaho. Got no money to work on it either. Haha! Did get some parts for it at christmas if that counts. A 4" Cowl and wheels.

Sounds like you guys got some serious stuff going on. Keep up the good work!

5. Sorry but my user name is a bit misleading! When I started my concept of what I wanted it included a stroked 383. Upon investigation and knowing my skill level I decided to stick with the standard 350. I have never built a motor from a bare block but that is what I'm doing. I wanted to do it at least once in my life so here I go! I started with a GM 350 4-bolt mains. Got a Summit bottom end kit with Keith Black Hyperutectic pistons and an Eagle crank. I read 3 books, 1 video and countless TV shows. It took me a year but I have the short block built and now to the next step. I have the Edelbrock top end performace package with the Performer RPM heads and cam. I had some clearance issues with the timing set but that is now corrected and I'm off to the next step, timing cover and balancer...

6. WELL HERE IN OHIO ITS PRETTY COLD. SO IM DOING A FRAME OFF RESTO TO MY 1966 CHEVELLE. IT IS A MALIBU AND NOT AN SUPER SPORT. AS MUCH AS I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ONE IN THIS DAY AND AGE IT SURE IS NOT IN MY BUDGET.TORE THE CAR COMPLETELY APART BEFORE THE WEATHER GOT BAD. NOW THE BODY IS UNDER A TARP IN BACK DRIVEWAY.THE FRAME IS CLEANED AND PAINTED WITH POR-15 SEMI BLACK.350 ENGINE 60 OVER..468 .480 CAM.2.02 461 HEADS POLISHED. BEEN EBAYING MOST PARTS BUT LUCKLY I LIVE 20 MILES FROM SUMMIT RACING.FREINDS TELL ME ITS LOOKING GOOD AND I QUESS I HAVE TO AGREE.PLAN IS TO HAVE ROLLING CHASSIS AND DRIVE TRAIN DONE FOR SPRING. THEN COMES THE BODY WHICH ONLY NEEDS FRONT FLOOR PANS A FENDER AND SOME PAINT.I WILL TELL YOU THIS I HAVE PLENTY OF CASH RAPPED UP IN KEROSENE TO HEAT THE GARAGE THATS FOR SURE.MEASURE TWICE CUT ONCE.GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND BE SAFE.

7. just checked it's six degrees out and i'm toast in the garage working on my new spring,summer,fall daily power plant.the gas miser is a 420 stroker the 400 two bolt has been bored 30 over plate honed,decked and fitted with howards splayed main caps.the rotating assy.is a eagle 4340 crank.6"h beams with j.e. pistons 9.1 c.r. . the top end is edel e-tec 200cc alum. heads with edel pro flow fuel injection i'm going to have to get bigger injectors to feed the v-7 ysi vortech blower.as for cam i'm not sure if it will bea solid or hyd roller. i can only hope i'm doing my part to help to help the oil industry.

8. Have major El Cheapo extreme budget build up. 1983 chevy 1/2 ton truck was given to me by father in law. Am about to pull stock 305. Found if you can believe this, a complete assembled pair of edlebrock rpm performer heads PN 60619 at a recycling plant (Free!). They were in a 72 pickup that was about to go into shredder. Took them to two different machine/speed shops, both said these are ready to bolt on. Am putting xtreme energy 268 with Performer RPM intake(wife bought), 600 holley, long tube headers, on a 350 2-bolt mains completely stock, which I just bought yesterday from a friend for $50.00 bucks! This was on a running vehicle. I'll be scavenging the city for more parts this week, and keep you posted.

9. New paint, weatherstrip and decals/emblems for the IROC. If I complete that and am not broke or homeless, I'll redo the interior. L98 has SLP runners, headers and other small bolt ons for now. Theres always next winter right?

10. Well, as I expected, I ran into a little snag in my build. I have the timing cover and oil pan on. Borrowed a magnetic mount dial indicator to check TDC was 0 deg on timing tab and balancer. Guess what, 0 degrees on balancer is 8 degrees BTDC. That was in the books so I was not too surprised. What did surprise me was that the front crank throw was contacting the oil pan. First oil pan I tried was stock steel stamp and didn't fit with HV oil pump. The other one (that is now installed) cleared the pump but now apparently does not clear the first crank throw. Now my big question for the day. How easy is it to put a Gen I 350 into a 1967 Buick Skylark? Feel free to email at mark.buckner@dcma.mil.
