I’ve made no secret of the fact that I dig it when I get the chance to head over to Westech Performance Group for a round of dyno testing. Running an engine, dialing it in, testing various parts against each other—it’s all good stuff. And when a combo you’ve pieced together makes a big number, it’s entirely satisfying. On the other hand, I also really enjoy the post-test ritual. The day doesn’t end with the last test run; it ends when the engine is off the dyno, any mess it made is cleaned up, and any parts, tools, and other paraphernalia that were used are put away. And as a rule of thumb, I don’t leave until all this is done. There’s something about this part of the day—the pressure is off, the task has been accomplished, and it’s just plain fun to jump in and help with the work involved in pulling an engine off the dyno, all the while shooting the breeze with Steve Brule and comparing notes on the day’s work—or anything else that comes to mind. And when we’re done, it’s like we’ve erased all signs of our presence, leaving the dyno open and ready for its next challenger. It’s a satisfying way to end a day.
