In my last entry, I mentioned that I had a little Friday night appointment scheduled with the rear brakes of my ’84 Z28, working on a brake upgrade story for a future issue of CHP. I was concerned about how we were going to remove the lower caliper pin on the right rear disc brake setup, since said pin runs right into the lower rear control arm when you try to remove it. My comment was, “Now where’d I leave that shop manual?” It was a rhetorical statement, since I knew exactly where my Camaro’s shop manual was, and was certain that it would yield the magic formula for extracting said caliper pin. Now, I’m a big believer in going by the book, at least when it comes to this kind of thing, since I’m an idealist and actually believe that directions can be of value. And the book did indeed yield a formula, but there wasn’t much magic in it, to say the least. I thought about reproducing it here, in all its convoluted glory, but frankly, blogs aren’t supposed to be that long. The process involved unbolting every piece of parking brake bracketry that’s attached to the caliper, along with removing the top caliper pin, which was supposed to allow just enough wiggle room to remove the lower pin. So we unbolted and dropped the control arm instead, and voila, the pin was out. You probably knew this already, but it just goes to show you—it pays to know when to follow the book, and when not to.
