Not everyone thinks hands-free sets are the answer.
I broke the law while driving into work this morning. Anyone who’s driven with me would probably say, “Yeah, and your point is?” And in this case I actually have one. I didn’t just play fast and loose with the speed limit (hey, who doesn’t?), or indulge in a California Rolling Stop.
No, I defied the big one, the crackdown we’ve all been hearing about for months now. Yes, even though it’s July 1 here in the Golden State, I talked on my cell phone, while driving, without some type of hands-free setup. I’m not proud of this, and I had my neck on a guilty swivel the whole time, but I really needed to make a call, so I did it. I’ll try to restrain myself until this weekend, when I can go hands-free shopping. It’s the law, and I can’t afford the fines, so I won’t complain too much. And it actually makes sense…or does it?
According to an article I recently read, “More states say cellphones and driving don’t mix.” (Click Here) But keep reading, right up until the question “Is using a hands-free set safer?” Unexpectedly, the pundit quoted a study that says no, “drivers using headsets are just as distracted.” Imagine that—trying to do two things at once leads to distraction, even when one of the things doesn’t involve holding a phone up against an ear.
Given my druthers, I think I might actually like to go back to the days when we didn’t really need to make a call phone while driving. Remember that? Hell, back then we had no A/C and our windows down, so we couldn't have heard the thing anyway. But as you all know, there’s no going back. So I’ll be going to the cell store—soon.
