Some more arms and legs would be nice

We were trying out as contortionists and didn’t even know it…

It happens a lot, most of the time without even realizing it. Whether it’s under the car, in the car, or even on top of the dang thing. We often wrap ourselves in these crazy and contorted positions when we’re wrenching on the car. Take for example this weekend. My brother and I were installing some new linkage for the transmission on his ’72 Nova. Not only did my brother find himself on his back under the car, but his left leg was stretched out pushing up against the driver’s side tire for leverage. His other leg, bent and twisted searching for grip—both arms diving deep into the tranny tunnel, trying to feed me the shifter cable. Where was I? Well, I got posted up on all fours atop the engine. Yeah, I know sound familiar? Like a monkey for bananas, I too had my limbs stretched reaching for the allusive shifter cable. An hour of fighting landed us what we wanted and we got the shifter cable routed and attached to the transmission. It’s one of those moments where you find yourself laughing and giggling like little boys after you realize what you just did. All that work for a shifter cable? Ha! We might as well join the circus as contortionists.
