Sadly, we just received this from Boyd Coddington Jr. at Greg Weld Competition Wheels...

"In the greatest of regret we have to deliver the news that at the age of 64 Greg Weld has passed away from undisclosed health complications.

In the short existence of Greg Weld Competition Wheels, Greg felt more pride and accomplishment in the products and service and with the talented team that he has gathered within the last 12 months. It was Greg’s wish to have Greg Weld Competition Wheels thrive as a successful after Market Company.

The Greg Weld Competition Wheel Team plans to do just that, we will continue on with the vision that Greg had for his new venture."

About Greg Weld

As a 23 year old Champion Sprint Car driver, Greg Weld began questioning the quality and industry standards for racing wheels. Initially, only his engineer dad believed in his new ideas. In 1967, Greg started Weld Wheels with $2300 he’d saved from racing and the simple idea of making Sprint Car wheels that performed better.

In his dad’s shop (Taylor “Pappy” Weld), Greg developed...a new kind of Sprint Car wheel (the original Weld Racing wheels) with a unique design that was lighter, truer and stronger than the competition. With those same wheels, Greg won the 1967 USAC National Sprint Car Championship. The next year, at age 24, Greg was driving for Andy Granatelli. He qualified and raced in the Indianapolis 500 at the Brickyard. Top pros took notice of the new wheel design and its unique features which actually increased the strength and concentricity of the wheel while reducing unsprung weight. For Greg, challenging the limits of conventional thinking came as second nature. His next vision was forging racing wheels out of aluminum. “I always knew we would succeed. That comes from believing in what you’re doing and striving to do it better than anyone thought possible” Greg says.

Over the next 25 years, Greg’s vision set in motion the philosophy of constant improvements and innovation. Weld Racing became the dominant racing wheel in the world.
