Sometimes, the imagination goes a little wild

'65 Corvair

As I finished up my story on the recent Columbus Goodguys show for our December issue, I took a last look through the outtakes—the photos that won’t make it onto the pages of CHP. Call me kooky, but I dig this patriotic-hued ’65 Corvair. My mind immediately went into overdrive. Wouldn’t a supercharged Ecotech with a C5-spec six-speed transaxle be just perfect hiding under that rear lid? Then again, if a SBC will fit back there, so will an LS1. Radiator placement would provide an interesting dilemma, but nothing that couldn’t be overcome.  Handling? Well, it has to handle, and I have to admit to being a bit ignorant when it comes to Corvair suspension hop-ups, but there has to be considerable room for improvement, right? I’ve heard of one that runs the Silver State Classic Challenge with C4 Corvette suspension grafted in—that would work for me. Wheels? That’s a hard one. Something factory looking, I think, but large enough for 17-inch tires with some big binders behind them. Stealthy. Unlike the paint, which I don’t think I’d change. A rollcage, on the other hand, would probably be a good idea--to be safe at any speed, of course.
