That saying, “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug,” takes on a whole new meaning when you’re streaking across the Nevada desert at 160 mph. A car strew with bug guts is a normal consequence of the 90-mile race down Highway 318 during the Silver State Classic Challenge. When you’re churning forward with the big, flat nose of a ’66 Chevelle, pushed forth at triple-digit speeds, the bugs don’t have a chance. If your car holds together and you do everything else right, however, you might have a chance in this annual speedfest. Then again, if you don’t do everything right and your car holds together, you still might have a chance. You’ll have to read the mag to get the whole story, but this time—for once—I count myself as the windshield rather than the bug.
