Leaving our mark wherever we can
As cool a gig as it is, working on Chevy High is still a job. Just like many of you, we're exchanging labor for a wage that we (attempt to) live on. Yes, I'm saying that we work for a living, and often wish we didn't have to, and damn, these deadlines really suck. Sound familiar? But sometimes, I, for one, get reminded that this deal carries a bit more meaning than "just" working. Those of you who bother to read my in-print and online scribbling know that I just made a trip to the Silver State Classic Challenge open road race. You've also probably figured out that I'm gonna tease you with little tidbits right up until the story runs in CHP. So there's the first point. As part of my "job." I got to fly to Nevada, don the gear, and burn rubber. What's not to like about that? Personally, I think I oughta learn to be a bit more appreciative.
On the second point, I ran in one of the faster classes, so by the time I entered the starting grid, only a few cars were on tap to start their runs: 160, 170, and 180 mph, as well as the Unlimited class. There wasn't a big rush to be ready, but still, we're talking a group of guys (and one woman) all getting ready to do 90 miles of open road at 150 mph and up. So as we all hung out, I introduced myself, shot the breeze, and handed out some CHP stickers, telling the drivers, "Hey, do whatever you want with these later, I know you're busy with pre-race." And the response? It was, "Hey, cool, I'll put these on the car right now!" And so it was that 7 of the 9 fastest cars at the Silver State made the run wearing the Chevy High Performance logo, including 3 class winners, 2 runners up, and a BMW M5 with an LS7 under the hood.
Truth be told, the daily grind gets me down, and sometimes I wonder if I'd be better off stamping out widgets in a factory. But that show of enthusiasm for this magazine, something the whole CHP team puts its all into, did my spirits good. Chevy High stickers? Thanks for the lift, guys. Next time, I'm bringing enough for everyone.
