For the most part, classic cars are an impractical indulgence—and there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it’s part of their enduring charm. We don’t work and sacrifice to own them so they can be employed in day-to-day, sensible functions. We do it for more sentimental reasons—these cars touch something inside, whether nostalgia or sentiment or memory or any other feeling. And, they’re just plain fun. On the other hand, I can’t help but sort of dig it when people use their classic Chevy for practical reasons on top of all the other less practical—but equally rewarding—reasons. Take Hal Sullivan’s ’70 El Camino SS, for instance, which you’ll see in our February issue. Hal didn’t go for an Elky because he couldn’t afford a Chevelle—that’s a myth that most Elco owners would like dispelled. No, Hal went for it because it could haul his kayak or his bike wherever he needs to go. There’s a lot of sentiment that goes with this ride as well, but I think it’s sort of cool that it does some real-world work. That just adds to the fun, I think. What about you?
