CRATE & CRASH

It's part of the job...

No, we don't get any hazard pay while we are on the job. It may not seem like a lot of work to snap a couple photos here and there, but when you are searching for the perfect spot, you'll do just about anything to get there. Take for example my trips to Rubio's Auto Body in Sun Valley, CA (818.252.0065), there my car was being prepped for a skin coat of Primer paint when the table across the work-bay beckoned my call. I ran towards it but it was too tall for me to leap on to it with all of my camera gear. My next option was a budget ladder (milk crate). I slid the crate over to table and used it to get to top of the table. Once up, I got my shot and was ready to jump down utilizing my new crate as a step-stool. However, as I took my final steps off of the table and onto the crate, I failed to realize the crate was disentegrating from years of use. My foot crashed through the bottom of the crate and it was swallowed alive. In mid-flight I realized my landing would be hard. I buckled up and prepared myself for the worst. SLAM! All 170 plus pounds and my camera equipment smacked the bondo-dust covered floor. It sounded like a steak hitting the grill. All in all I was fine and somehow I saved my camera gear in the process. The crate however was a different story. It died and I got the shot I was looking for. It was all worth it.
